GEORGE RR Martin left Game of Thrones fans underwhelmed with his latest social media post.
The acclaimed author, who wrote the Song of Ice & Fire saga upon which the HBO drama is based, took to Twitter to update fans on his latest work.
However, to say the reception was frosty would be a major understatement.
The post confirmed that the source material behind spin-off series House of the Dragon was being released later this year in paperback form.
“Happy to announce that Fire & Blood, the inspiration behind the upcoming House of the Dragon, will release in paperback on May 5th in the US, Canada, and UK,” he wrote to his 1.4million followers.
“This paperback edition will include 5 brand new illustrations. Pre-orders begin soon!”
Alas, Martin’s fan base felt he had got his priorities wrong and should focus on producing new material rather than rejigging formats.
They replied in their hundreds to the announcement, urging the 71 year old to crack on with writing his latest novel and executive producing the prequel series.
“Enough with this back story s**t, we don’t need this. We want the Winds of Winter and the books that will complete the series. No one will care about any of HBO GOT backstory s**t after they botched up the GOT’s last season,” one Twitter fumed.
“Wow, an update no one was waiting for! You won’t get a cent from me until Winds of Winter is published,” a second chimed in.
A third snapped: “Happy to announce uh? At this point you’re trolling.”

While a fourth raged: “I’d be more inclined to support this if you didn’t entrust your work to two idiots that subsequently atom bombed all the plot and character developments, then p****d on the remains. It’s forever tainted.”
Opting not to respond to the grievances, Martin kept a dignified silence in the comments section.
It’s not the only Game of Thrones furore to crop up this week.
Elsewhere, fans kicked off after noticing a plot hole with Bran Stark’s time-travelling powers.
Elsewhere, Walder Fray actor David Bradley revealed the gruelling filming struggles behind the infamous Red Wedding massacre.
